As assembly elections approached across five Indian states, the Election Commission of India turned to Punjab's most trusted and experienced officers. A total of 34 officers — 26 senior IAS, 7 IPS and 1 IFS from the Punjab cadre — have been deployed as election observers for polls in West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. Among them are 6 women officers, a significant signal of inclusive governance in India's democratic process. All officers will remain on duty in their allotted constituencies until counting and results on May 4.

IAS officers serving as General Observers will monitor election expenditure, complaints, and adherence to the Model Code of Conduct, while IPS officers as Security Observers will oversee paramilitary deployment, booth management, and sensitive zone monitoring. Each observer reports directly to the Commission — the district DC or Returning Officer is not their superior but an equal partner in the process.
