In a landmark decision to ensure financial security and social dignity for acid attack survivors, the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has announced a major upgrade to its support scheme. The monthly financial assistance has been increased from ₹8,000 to ₹10,000, and the scheme — previously limited to women — has now been made fully gender-neutral, covering male and transgender survivors as well. The announcement was made by Social Security Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur from Chandigarh.

This decision is historic on two counts. First — the ₹2,000 increase in monthly support will better meet the medical and rehabilitation needs of survivors. Second — making the scheme gender-neutral acknowledges that acid attack victims are not only women — men and transgender individuals are also affected by such violence and equally deserve state protection and support.
